Pitching Elbow Ligaments
Although the elbow is actually more than one joint, this illustration will help you think about how it's designed to function. Anatomists call the elbow a hinge joint. Like a hinge on a cabinet door it's meant to open (extend) and close (flex). Although hinges have a little play or 'slop', side to side, they are not designed to move in this direction. These side to side forces are exactly how baseball pitching and throwing puts stress on the elbow connective tissues; the act of throwing as we know it is anatomically flawed.
